Growing Periandra mediterranea on post-mining substrate: native Fabaceae with potential for revegetation of degraded rupestrian grasslands in Brazil Acta Botanica
Figueiredo,Maurilio Assis; Diniz,Adriana Pedrosa; Abreu,Adriana Trópia de; Messias,Maria Cristina Teixeira Braga; Kozovits,Alessandra Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Recovery of degraded areas of rupestrian grasslands is hampered mainly by the limited knowledge regarding substrate management and the biology of native species suitable for revegetation of these areas. The aim of our study was to examine the establishment and growth of Periandra mediterranea in different textures of lateritic substrate from a mining-degraded area. The growth of P. mediterranea was evaluated using fine and coarse laterite, both with and without the addition of topsoil. Survival, dry biomass, content of chemical elements and nodulation were evaluated in ten individuals per treatment sixteen months after planting. Although the substrate has low nutrient content, yet high metal concentrations, all plants survived. Plants growing on...

Organic Matter Fractions and Quality of the Surface Layer of a Constructed and Vegetated Soil After Coal Mining. II - Physical Compartments and Carbon Management Index Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Pillon,Clenio Nailto; Penning,Letiane Helwig; Santos,Daiane Carvalho dos.
Soils constructed after mining often have low carbon (C) stocks and low quality of organic matter (OM). Cover crops are decisive for the recovery process of these stocks, improving the quality of constructed soils. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on total organic C (TOC) stocks, C distribution in physical fractions of OM and the C management index (CMI) of a soil constructed after coal mining. The experiment was initiated in 2003 with six treatments: Hemarthria altissima (T1), Paspalum notatum (T2), Cynodon dactylon (T3), Urochloa brizantha (T4), bare constructed soil (T5), and natural soil (T6). Soil samples were collected in 2009 from the 0.00-0.03 m layer, and the TOC and C stocks in the physical particle size...

Selection of native species from Caatinga (dry forest) to recovery of mesquite invaded areas PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Fabricante, Juliano Ricardo; Araújo, Kelianne Carolina Targino de; Castro, Raphaela Aguiar de; Souza, Bruna Sá Rodrigues de; Barros, Bianca Karolyne Reis de; Siqueira-Filho, José Alves de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the sociability of indigenous species from Caatinga with exotic invasive Prosopis sp. (mesquite) to be used in recovery projects of invaded areas. Twenty plots of 100 m² were installed, where  all woody species presenting height ≥ 15.0 cm had the number of individuals recorded. To evaluate the association of native species with mesquite we used the association index. In order to study the correlation of Prosopis sp. with other taxa, we used Pearson coefficient and the categorization performance of native species was calculate by arithmetic mean of the rate of association sum and Pearson coefficient. We sampled 28 species associated with mesquite, 14 of which presented the inclusion criteria of presenting at least 5...
